The Stockton High School Ecology class went on a field trip on Wednesday, April 14. The class visited Hammons Product Company, where they toured the leading black walnut processing facility in Missouri. The conversation of the tour focused on black walnut and environmental sustainability. The students learned how Hammons process, use and market the whole black walnut- not just the nut. The class also visited Sho-Neff Orchards, where they learned about the new cultivars of black walnut trees, how they are grown, and their environmental and production benefits. They also learned about the negative impact of stream bank erosion on the black walnut orchards. They were able to observe several practices that are in place to help to control and reduce stream bank erosion in an effort to conserve the orchard topsoil. The students also visited the Stockton Lake Dam, where they met with Derek Philips. He shared the history and information about the lake and dam and addressed the current environmental issues. He showed the students how to identify a variety of invasive species around the lake and discussed their negative impact to the native ecosystem. Thank you to the following hosts. Hammons Product Company, Brian Hammons, Miles Brite, Josh Abercrombie. Stockton Lake Corp of Engineers, Derek Phillips.

Stockton Middle School wants to congratulate Mrs. Donis Ewing as our April Staff Member of the Month! Here are some comments from fellow staff members: “Aside from being the usual awesomeness that is required to run this place, Donis is also the face of our entire building. She represents it well. She is thorough, organized, and makes coffee everything morning. Donis is always helpful and resourceful. She is always fast to solve problems and always steps up to them herself. Donis is a great first face of people to see in the office. She is always polite and helpful.” Thank you Mrs. Ewing, for all that you do!!
